Stories from the Ridge

Head to the Juneberry Ridge plant sale this weekend.

Get your soil ready, make a plan: The annual Juneberry Ridge plant sale is back, 8 a.m.-noon April 20, and the farm will have more than 5,000 locally grown plants for purchase, starting as low as $3.

Juneberry Ridge is a 750-acre regenerative farm and nature retreat about an hour east of Charlotte. Founded more than 10 years ago, it has grown into a thriving agritourism destination with event space, private cabins, farming, culinary experiences and a 43,000 square foot greenhouse.

When visitors come to Juneberry, they are so often inspired by what we’re doing, they want to plant and grow at their homes. The annual plant sale is a fantastic way to encourage budding green thumbs or experienced growers with the bounty of the Southeast.

Plants for sale will include (but are not limited to):

  • Edible and medicinal plants: Nasturtium, Eucalyptus varieties, Witch Hazel, wild Bergamot
  • Native and pollinator-attractant plants: Calendula, Sunflower varieties, Marigold varieties
  • Herbs: Basil varieties, Mint varieties (including ground cover)
  • Fruit and nut trees: Redbud, Sourwood, Sassafras, Sycamore Tree, Elderberry, Mulberry, Persimmon, Muscadine
  • Vegetable and fruit garden plants: Tomatoes, peppers
  • Succulents: A selection of hardy drought-resistant plants

Juneberry horticulture experts will be on site as well, to answer questions and share knowledge, much of which is put into practice on property. Marigolds (which will be available for purchase) are a great example.

Marigolds are beautiful plants, but they also are a natural repellent for pests, including deer. Planting marigolds in and around your garden may keep deer and rabbits away, as well as insects. The flowers draw the pests away from the things that you love, including tomatoes and squash, among other tasty plants.

The bulk of the plants for the April 20 sale have been nurtured from seed at Juneberry. Additional rooted plugs, bare root trees/shrubs, and other plants were purchased from local nurseries as well as others across North Carolina and Tennessee.

The plant sale is free, but a full slate of activities are available at Juneberry should you choose to spend the day on property:

Plant Sale: 8 a.m.-noon; Hinson Greenhouse, 10145 Hinson Road, Norwood; Free, RSVP requested but not required
